Following the success of his first NFT project for Art Blocks, Cosmic Reef, Leo Villareal now unveils his newest NFT collection, Cosmic Bloom.

The pieces are created with bespoke live code and are influenced by astronomical phenomena, atomic patterns, and organic forms seen in nature. Each new piece in this collection of digital artworks stands out from the rest with its attention-grabbing combination of geometric forms that are both complicated and plentiful.

The artist has a history of using code to create elaborate visual sequences in his light sculptures, which inspired Cosmic Bloom. By employing this method, he can bring his artistic vision into the NFTs, where he creates sculptures out of pixels and binary code.

Cosmic Reef, the artist’s first NFT series creation, was completely generative, with each mint being generated randomly by live, proprietary programming. The artist has utilized similar bespoke code to generate many potential iterations for Cosmic Bloom, from which he has chosen the best examples to represent his vision. The final Cosmic Bloom collection consists of these handpicked pieces and can be purchased as a blind mint.

Two of his most well-known pieces of public art are The Bay Lights, a site-specific light sculpture that fills the whole western span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and Illuminated River, a series of generative light sculptures put on nine bridges over the River Thames in London.

The Renwick Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles all have works by Villareal in their permanent collections. In addition to the Brooklyn Academy of Music and MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, his work has been shown in the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Madison Square Park in New York City, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC.
